Your physician will conduct an initial pregnancy assessment and provide care during the early stages of your pregnancy. They will also arrange a referral to an obstetrician if needed.

Planning a Pregnancy
If you are thinking about becoming pregnant, taking care of yourself now is important:
Take 1 mg of folic acid daily. Women with no health risks and a planned pregnancy should take a multivitamin with folic acid for at least 2–3 months before conception and throughout pregnancy.
Women with health concerns or a family history of neural tube defects may need 5 mg of folic acid. Consult your physician before becoming pregnant.
Quit smoking and encourage your partner to quit.
Avoid alcohol, recreational drugs, and herbal medicines.
Review all prescription and over-the-counter medications with your physician or our Clinical Pharmacist. You can also contact Motherisk for drug safety information at 1-416-813-6780.
Follow the Canada Food Guide for healthy nutrition during pregnancy, or book an appointment with one of our Dietitians for personalized advice.
