Use of AI Scribe
Use of AI Scribe Technology in Our Clinic
Our clinic has introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) tool known as an AI scribe to assist during patient visits. This technology helps capture and prepare notes from our discussions, allowing your doctor to spend more time focusing on you rather than typing or writing during your appointment.
What Is an AI Scribe?
An AI scribe is a secure digital application that listens to the conversation between you and your doctor and produces a draft visit note. Your doctor reviews, edits, and approves this note before it becomes part of your official electronic medical record.
How It Works During Your Visit
With your permission, your doctor will activate the AI scribe at the beginning of your appointment. The scribe will generate a summary based on your conversation and the doctor’s observations. It does not make any clinical decisions or replace medical judgment—it simply prepares a written draft. Once your visit is complete, your doctor will carefully review and revise the note to ensure all information is accurate and complete before finalizing it in your record.
Protecting Your Privacy
We take your privacy very seriously. The AI scribe vendor we use complies with Ontario’s Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) and other applicable privacy laws. Any temporary audio recordings or transcripts are securely deleted once the doctor has finalized the note. Only the approved version remains in your medical record.
Possible Risks
While strong safeguards are in place, there is always a small risk of documentation errors or data handling issues when technology is involved. These may include minor inaccuracies in how information is transcribed or processed. Your doctor is ultimately responsible for reviewing and correcting all records to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Your Consent
Using the AI scribe is entirely voluntary. Your doctor will ask for your consent before using it, and you can withdraw that consent at any time. Choosing not to use the AI scribe will not affect the quality of care you receive. If you have any questions or concerns about this technology, please speak with your doctor or a member of our clinic team.
